Ok some of you may remember the predecessor of this article [500+ FPS Power Upgrade Spring for APS2/Type 96] and how disappointed we all were at the results.
Quick recap:
We obtained the MTX Power Upgrade Spring from Evike.com and were trying to install it into a Well: Warrior I L96 [review on the Well: Warrior I]. We were very disappointed to find out that the upgrade spring we had purchased was a 9mm spring while the Well Warrior I required a 7mm spring. The spring simply did not fit. The worst part of the story is that Evike.com said, right on the products page, that the spring fit the Well series of the rifle. Check the screenshot below.
So I got on the phone with Evike and they told me it would fit with "modifications" to the rifle. You can imagine my frustration. I now have an upgrade spring that I cannot use unless I "Modify" my rifle. I considered sending the spring back but it turns out I would have to pay shipping and a restocking fee. On a $20 spring I decided it wouldn't be worth it. Might as well keep it around for say...this article when I obtain an AGM L96.
So I went ahead (a couple months later) and purchased the AGM/JG L96 from Evike.com for $78.99. I was assured by the customer service that my upgrade spring would fit with NO MODIFICATION.
To my extreme pleasure the upgrade spring installed just fine. No problems. Strange though; the upgrade spring was about 3/4" shorter than the stock spring. You could tell it was more rigid though.
Look for a disassembly guide to the AGM/JG L96 coming soon. It is a little more difficult and complicated than the Well Warrior I Disassembly guide.
Ok this is usually what everyone is waiting for with these article. How did the spring actually perform. Did it make 500fps? Lets find out:
All chrono tests with .20 BB's |
Claimed | Tested |
| First Shots (stock, no upgrade) | 444 | |
| After Upgrade (max fps recorded) | 480 | |
| After Upgrade (first 10 shots) | 500+ | 477 average |
| After Upgrade (another 10 shots) | 470 average | |
| After Upgrade (another ~100 shots in 2 hours) | 443 (less than stock) | |
| Let rifle sit for 2 days | 463 (consistent +/- 8) | |
Pros:
Makes the rifle faster.
Cons:
Not as fast as advertised. Seems to degrade in power rather quickly. Rifles looses a lot of its quiet advantage.
Conclusion:
Considering this is the only spring upgrade that is available (that I know of) for the clone L96's I am still glad that I went through with it. In the right hands a 463fps bolt action can do a lot of damage. Very disappointed however in that it did not (even once) reach the advertised mark.
