Everything shown in the above image is what comes in the box with the m81. Pistol, speed loader, wall charger (2 piece), battery (7.2v 500mAh Ni-MH), silencer and one magazine (~30 rounds). The pistol itself is a molded composite (very tough plastic) while the slide (non blowback remember) is metal. The threads on the tip of the barrel (used to attach silencer are plastic). The silencer itself is made of plastic and is not functional.
If you have owned one of the CYMA G18C [pointact.com link] in the past then your first thought will be "man this is just like the CYMA G18C I use to have." You are correct and not-so-correct at the same time. Internals seem to be the same, interchangeable even (not tested). Both have full auto and the same annoying safety. I thought I was going to be able to use my G18C magazines for this pistol even. That is until I tried it. For some reason they decided to redesign the magazines. They are just different enough to not work [DE M81 USP Mag, CYMA G18C Mag]. At least they were only $8.00 a piece at pointact though.
The full auto is also the same at the CYMA. ~950 rounds per minute. It can drain the mag fairly quickly.
Double Eagle claims this pistol sports a metal gearbox. It appears that there are plastic gears visible though. Perhaps they mean metal shell. Either way it doesn't really worry me. I have had my CYMA G18C for a while now and it is shooting just as good as the day I got it.
The Hop-up has a strange issue. We have tested 4 of these pistols. Out of the 4, 2 of them put a slight amount of hop-up on the bb even when the hop-up unit was set to zero. The bb would rise about 2 feet at a distance of ~30 feet. So it would appear that you have a 50-50% chance of getting one of the pistols with this issue.
To remove the slide (to adjust hopup or gain access to the battery) simply pull the hammer back with your thumb and pull up on the rear of the slide. NOTE: the silencer must be removed to take the slide off.
Pros:
Works in all temperature conditions.
Mags are reasonably priced. Should be great for CQB.
Cons:
Potential hop-up problems. Velocity fairly slow.
Possible mag release issues. Safety is not one that can be turned off in a REAL hurry.
Conclusion:
I will always use a gas pistol when I can. But when it gets to cold for gas this is my next choice. What it lacks in fps it tries to make up for with full auto. Would love to use the full auto in CQB. Effectively this is the same pistol as the CYMA G18C. Base your decision on weather you like Glock or HK better. Don't forget you get the silencer (non functional, but hey it looks cool) if you go HK though.
The Double Eagle m81 USP (AEP) can be purchased at the following retailers:
I attended an Op in 30 degree (F) weather so obviously gas pistols were out of the question. I was rolling with a snipers' rifle and got into a mess. Out came the pistol and I did get a kill with it. Honestly though this pistol, with its low fps, is best utilized either in CQB or very "up clone and personal" outdoor encounters. Works great as a safety kill weapon too!
One of the guys on my team had a problem with his drop leg holster pressing the mag release lever (under the trigger [not like the G18C]) and dumping his mag. He had to mod his holster. Watch out for that.
